Gas prices at all time high due to flooding
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Consumers are beginning to pay more at the gas pump because of flooding at a southeast Kansas refinery. The flooding in Coffeyville reduced fuel supplies and sent wholesale prices soaring. Prices spiked ten cents a gallon overnight at some stations. And by the end of the week, prices could reach from $3.25 to $3.50 a gallon in the Midwest and Great Lakes. That's according to Tom Kloza, publisher and chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service. He says the prices the next ten days could be the highest of the year. Before last week's flooding, the Coffeyville Resources refinery produced 108,000 barrels a day of gasoline, diesel and other fuel oils. That's about one-seventh of the refining capacity for the Great Plains.
Fatal work inccident leaves two dead
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Two workers are dead after falling between 500 and 800 feet from a broadcast tower in rural Douglas County. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says the two men fell yesterday while installing equipment on the tower two miles east of Lawrence. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff's Lieutenant Kari Wempe says the office isn't releasing the men's names pending notification of next of kin. She says investigators from the Sheriff's Office and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are looking into what caused an equipment malfunction that allowed the workers to fall.
Kelsey Smith's accused killer eligible for death penalty
OLATHE, Kan. (AP) The man accused of abducting and killing Overland Park teenager Kelsey Smith is now charged with rape and aggravated sodomy, making him eligible for the death penalty. But Johnson County prosecutor Phill Kline says he hasn't yet decided whether to seek the death penalty for 26-year-old Edwin Hall of Olathe. Citing a gag order, Kline says he can't talk about why it took more than a month to file the new charges. Hall already had been charged with kidnapping and murdering the 18-year-old, but the rape and sodomy charges make the slaying a capital crime under Kansas law. Smith was kidnapped June Second from the parking lot of an Overland Park Target store. Her body was found four days later in a Missouri park, 20 miles east of the abduction site
