Bitten by the radio bug at 13 I was on the air in my hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina by age 16. At 18, I left home for WISE, Asheville, North Carolina, then quickly made the jump to KIRL, St. Louis. Uncle Sam invited me to join him, and I spent several years in Germany on the American Forces Network doing a daily show heard over all of Europe, and a daily show on AFN Frankfurt.
Upon leaving the service, I embarked on a whirlwind tour of great radio stations and cities... KIQQ, Los Angeles, WMYQ, Miami, WQDR, Raleigh, WKLS-FM, Atlanta as Program Director & on air personality, KYA-FM, San Francisco as Program Director and air personality.
After a few years in the record business, I got back into radio in Los Angeles as a part of the original staff of KHTZ, followed by KFI, and KIQQ (again).
By now, I was missing my roots in the South, so I came back to WKLS (96 Rock) Atlanta as midday host, then eventually became one-half of one of the most successful morning shows in Atlanta radio history (Mark & Steve). We left KLS for KSHE St. Louis, but I returned to Atlanta one year later to stay. I joined WYAY Atlanta as morning co-host and became Program Director in 1998. I also host the afternoon show.
That, in a nutshell, is over 35 years in this business.
